Gran Canaria is one of seven islands in the Canary Islands. The islands belong to Spain and has some 2 million inhabitants. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the largest islands. The climate is warm all year around.
Most people visit the beaches in the varmer southern part of Gran Canaria or the Capital - Las Palmas - in the north and totally miss the beautiful inland of this island with its varied landscape.
The mountaneous inland is stunning with windling roads passing by mountains and small pittoresque, lovely white villages like Tejeda and Teror. Combining a few days in the south, a couple of days in Las Palmas including its lovely old town - La Vegueta and some days hiking in the central parts of Gran Canaria is the perfect roundtrip.
The distances are short. You drive from the northern part of Gran Canaria to the most southern part in less than an hour.
When to go?
Gran Canaria is a year-round-destination. In Winter (November-March) it is about 18-25 degrees and in Summer (April-October) 23-28 degrees.
How to get around?
The public transport is well-developed with buses to all major villages. From the airport you easily go by bus to Las Palmas and most villages in the south, central and western parts of the island. It is also quite cheap, a few Euros from the Airport to the center of Las Palmas.
If you want more flexibility renting a car is a good option.
