The most common hike from Schynige Platte is probably hiking the Panorama Trail from Schynige Platte to First and then taking the First gondola down to Grindelwald. That hike takes some 6-7 hours.

We chose another hike, simply to lower the costs. All the gondolas and trains up in the mountains cost (sorry to say that) a fortune in Switzerland. If you are a family of four paying about 30-40 Euros oneway each for non-residents transportation only can end up taking a large part of your travel budget.

Starting in Grindelwald we took the local train to Burglauenen where we got off to hike up to Schynige Platte. From there is a lovely ancient train down to Wilderswil where you change trains to come back to Grindelwald. This was a great hike, probably the best during our week in Grindelwald, although it was quite streneous!

This hike is also part of the Eiger Ultra Trail. The only thing to be aware of is that you have to be at Schynige Platte in time for the last train that leaves at 17:53 (check that up before you go!).

The trail is quite well signed but there are a few places where you need to pay attention. We had to ask some farmers about the way once, but that was actually our own fault as we were chitchatting to much and not paying attention to where we were walking.

We met only four other hikers on the way, all of them going down. They thought we were crazy hiking upwards, but we simply like hiking upwards better since that is more about effort and saves the knees.

Finally at Schynige Platte there is a restaurant for food or just a cup of coffee if you like. The views are amazing and the reward going down with the beautifyl train having views of the valley and Lake Brienz is fabulous.
