Bachalpsee

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

DAY HIKES AND ROUND TRIPS

Bachalpsee

Switzerland

Hiking to Bachalpsee gives you that magical view of a mountain reflecting in a lake - the Bachalpsee. It is a hike that can be really easy if you only go to the lake and back or it can be a little more challenging if you decide to follow the Flower Trail to Bort or even all the way down to Grindelwald.

From Grindelwald you take the First gondola up to First (30 minutes). At First you should really take some time and walk out on the sky bridge and do the short walk by the cliff.

You then follow the signs to Bachalpsee. It is really easy to find and an easy walk for about an hour.

The hike to Bachalpsee and along the Flower trail

The view of the Bachalpsee with the Schreckhorn and the Finstarhorn reflecting in the lake is stunning. There are lots of places to have picnic by the lake. If the weather is nice you will probably not want to leave in the first place.

After Bachalpsee you decide to either to go back to First (3 kilometres) or continue along the beautiful Flower trail to Bort (5 kilometres) passing by Waldspitz. The Flower trail windles through a beautiful valley passing by a water fall where you can have a swim or just sit and relax dipping your toes into the water.

After passing by Waldspitz, the path continues through the woods and windles through the forest for about 30-45 minutes before you arrive at Bort, where the middle station of the First gondola. The trail is well marked all the way. Like always in Switzerland the signs show both the distance and the estimated hiking time to reach your destination.

At Bort we were getting a bit tired so we rented so called trotti bike scooters for the kids and went to the restaurant for a beer ourselves. Best beer of the day!

After that beer we had enough energy to walk all the way down to Grindelwald. On our way down we passed by some farms selling cheese. We stopped by and bought some to make the rösti (Swiss dish with potato, onion and cheese dish) for dinner.

How to get to the Jungfrau region?

It is really easy to get to the Jungfrau region from example Zurich since the trains are super efficient and comfortable.

We have heard there can be delays but that has never happened to us. From Zurich it is a little more than a three hours beautiful railway trip to for example Grindelwald. You change trains once - in Interlaken.
