Hike El Camino in San Sebastian

El Camino del Norte in

San Sebastian

Arriving in Pasaia you pass the bay by a fishing boat

This is a lovely 6 kilometres easy hike along the coast between San Sebastian and Pasaia east of San Sebastian.

The hike starts just after Zurriola beach on the east side of the city at the beginning of Avenue Navarre. Look out for a gas station - right there is where the path starts. It can be a bit confusing at first but as soon you see the gas station you are on the right track.

The hike starts with an ascent first but soon you will have magnificient views of San Sebastian and the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving at the end of the path you will have a fabulous view of Pasai de San Juan.

The route is very well marked and you will for sure not get lost. Trail running shoes works just fine.

Once you arrive in the harbour village of Pasaia de San Pedro you will see the village Pasaia de San Juan on the other side. That village is also the end of this hike. This is also the harbour entry of San Sebastian so you will probably also see some large cargo ships in the bay. Quite a contrast to the picturesque villages of Pasai de San Juan and San Pedro.

So, how to get to the other side? You just take one of the small and pretty fishing boats colored in the same colours as the Basque flag - red, green and white. The ride costs a few Euros and payment is (of course) in cash. The boat trip is very short so be sure to enjoy from the very beginning!

Once in Pasaia de San Juan you are probably hungry. And that is another nice thing with this hike. Once you arrive in Pasaia de San Juan there is an excellent seafood restaurant by the square. We tried Ziaboga, but you also find Casa Cámara that is said to be really good as well. It is a lot cheaper to eat here compared to in San Sebastian.

After a superb lunch watching the small boats cross the bay it is time to get back to San Sebastian. Unless you feel like walking your way back most people take the local bus for a few Euros. The bus leaves every 20 minutes and the ride will take you about 30 minutes to San Sebastian´s old town.

To find the bus stop, walk away from the ocean passing through the village. After leaving the pedestrian area the road is a bit upwards. Following the road for about 100 metres you reach the bus stop.
