The beaches in the south
The beaches along the southern coast of Gran Canaria attract a lot of tourists. The climate is more stable compared to the northern and central parts of the island and there are several sandy beaches.
Maspalomas is a desert famous for its costal dunes and Maspalomas Dunes nature reserve. It is well worth visiting. Sometimes when wind blows in from Sahara you might get golden skin from the sand.
Maspalomas is squeezed in by the (in)famous Playa Inglés in the east and the luxuary resort Meloneras in the west. The promenade along Meloneras is quite nice but do not expect anything typical canarian. This is the home of large 5-star hotels.
Playa del Cura
Playa del Cura is on the south western part, west of Meloneras and east of Puerto Mogan. It is a little more quiet than many other resorts and the guests are mostly families and couples. There are two beaches.
The road along the coast is closed east of Puerto Mogan due to erosion of the road which makes it a great road for running or biking since traffic is limited. It also brings with it the advantage that Playa del Cura is less trafficked than it used to be.
Within walking distance you find the more busy beach Playa de Amadores with water sports and some really nice beach club restaurants.
Puerto de Mogán
This is a cute village built in canarian style with 2-block white buildings decorated with bouganvillea and with narrow stonecobbled streets. The village has a small harbour.
From Puerto de Mogán there is a windling road (GC-200) to Veneguera (photo below) passing by Mogán north of Puerto de Mogán.
Where to stay in Gran Canaria?
It is really hard to find nice cosy boutique hotels in the Canary islands. We searched all over and finally booked an apartment hotel in Playa del Cura, Idyll Suites.
The apartments are really nice with large nicely decorated terraces with sunbeds and lovely views of the ocean. There is a pool, a jacuzzi and luxuary sun beds. Since the road between the hotel and the beach is closed it is a really relaxing place.
Where to eat?
We found an amazing little restaurant in Playa del Cura with the strangest name - Guantánamo.
This place is actually outside the little village of Playa del Cura and the building does not seem to promise much but the food with a canarian touch is great and it is very affordable. Remember to book a table! This place is crowded every night!
