Costa Brava north of Barcelona from Blanes up to the French border is famous for its rocky coastline and little beach villages. In Figueres you also find the Salvador Dalí museum and in the coastal town of Cadaques his birth place.
There are lots of lovely villages along the Costa Brava coast line. Depending on your preferences it is well worth doing some research before choosing where to stay since some of village has managed to keep more of their catalán character than others which on the other hand offer more water sports.
Tossa de Mar
Tossa de mar is about 100 kilometres north of Barcelona. The old-town is lovely with narrow and cobblestoned streets and is right by one of the beaches.
Calella de Palafrugell
Calella is the name for beach in catalán and calella de Palafrugell is then the beach or fishing village of Palafrugell which is located a bit further inland.
"Calella de Palafrugell really became
to be our favorite village."
Calella de Palafrugell really became to be our favorite village. The coast line north and south is lovely and you can follow a trail both ways. Right north you find another lovely beach in Llafranc with some really nice restaurants. A little bit further north you find the village north Tamariu which is also lovely.
If you are a Dalí-fan visiting the Dalímuseum in his home town Figueres is a must.
The museum which was designed by Dalí himself It is very popular so going there either off-season or early in the morning is a good thing.
If you drive 45 minutes east from Figueres you will arrive in Cadaques after 45 minutes. The road from Figueres to Cadaquez is partly narrow and very windling.
Cadaques is a small and really lovely fishing village. Dalí spent a few Summers here and his Summer house is open for visitors (pre-booking necessary).
Close to Cadaques you find Cap de Creuz which is also the starting point of the hiking route GR 11 that follows the Pyrenées all the way to the Atlantic ocean.
Where to stay?
We liked Calella de Palafrugell a lot and found a really nice hotel - Hotel Alga - a few hundred metres from the beach. The hotel looks a bit boring on the pictures but the rooms are large, comfortable and the atmosphere is really nice. The hotel also has a large garden and a swimming pool. They also have family rooms. Besides that the restaurant is very good.
Where to eat?
The restaurant at the hotel Alga is really really good. Besides that we liked the Sa Jambina close to the beach. Sa Jambina is a typical catalán restaurant and the menu is in catalán only.
