The beautiful Anaga National Park
Tenerife is seen from a far distance since the highest mountain in Spain, Teide, is on this little Canary island. Besides the national park with its´moon-like landscape around Teide the lush green Anaga National Park with its´ valleys is well worth a visit...
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands. It is perfect for a visit all year around but probably most popular during winter with 20-25 degrees. Here you find beaches and stunning national parks. Whereveer you go you see the mountain Teide, the highest mountain in Spain with its 3,718 metres…
Below you find some information about three great hikes on Tenerife including tips on where to stay and eat.
Where to hike on Tenerife?
The most popular places for hiking are the Anaga national park and Teide national park. A lot of people choose to get up really early in the morning to climb up to the top of the volcano mountain Teide. If you choose to do that a recommendation is to stay at the parador in the Teide national park.
For the Anaga national park you find a tourist information in Cruz del Carmen. They have maps of the area and you can also talk with one of the guides if you like. The trails are named PR-TF followed by a number
We also tried to walk the well-known Masca trail on the west coast. Unfortunately it was closed for reconstruction but we have gathered some information about it.
How to get to Tenerife?
Tenerife has two airports. The main international airport is in the south – Tenerife south Reina Sofia. There is also a smaller national airport in the north – Tenerife north Los Rodeos just outside the capital of Tenerife. If you fly in from the mainland of Spain you will probably arrive in Tenerife north.
If you choose to rent a car, be careful so that you choose the right airport. Also, Tenerife south is open 7/24 while Tenerife north has more limited opening hours.
How to get around in Tenerife?
Renting a car gives you flexibility and is the easiest way to get around. The roads are very well maintained. The drawback in going by car is that you need to walk a circular route, sometimes the same way back if it is a point-to-point hike. On the other hand, we have learnt that walking the same way back gives you a totally different experience since the views and light are different when walking back.
There are buses to most places in Tenerife including the small village of Masca. So, going by bus is definately an option but requires a bit more planning before you go.
Where to stay in Tenerife?
Most people stay in the capital Santa Cruz or in the former fishing villages along the west and south coast. There you find villages like Los Christianos, Playa de los Americanos, Los Gigantes. These places are common charter destinations.
We chose to stay in La Laguna in the north. La Laguna is an Unesco World Heritage and the former capital of Tenerife. There are several hotels in La Laguna and we chose to stay in La Laguna Gran Hotel in the city center. It has a lovely lobby, bar and wine tasting room in the older parts of the building. The rooms are in the new part of the hotel and does not have the same charm. Same goes with the restaurant.
For parking in a garage with direct access to the hotel you pay an additional 15 Euros a day. Another option is a large open parking just outside the hotel. You will have no problem finding a parking lot there during evenings and nights. Except for January 5th which is a large holiday in Spain with a big parade in the center of La Laguna.
From La Laguna it is only a 15 minutes drive to Anaga national park and to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. To Los Christianos it is one hour´s drive.
When to go to Tenerife?
Tenerife is an all year destination but it is a little warmer during summer (July-September). We were there in the beginning of January, the coldest month of the year, and it was a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings. La Laguna is at 543 metres height and colder than the charter destinations in the south. In January the temperature went down to 7 degrees in the evenings during our stay.
During daytime it was some +20 degrees Celsius. Great weather for hiking!
Also be aware of that sunset is already around 6-6:30 in winter time. By then it gets totally dark if you are not very close to one of the larger cities on the island.
